Venugopal from December 2015 to February 2016. The aim of this visit is to benefit from Dr. Venugopal's expert knowledge in multi-scale representation in view of the downscaling of the Megha-Tropiques rainfall product. The collaboration will also be an opportunity to test the methods developed for West Africa under the Indian climate. Variograms are used to compute the sampliing uncertainty of the 1°/1 day rainfall amount of the TAPEER product. September 2015: Release of relative humidity profile products 2015-09-11T09:49:47+01:00 2015-09-11T09:49:47+01:00 2015-09-11T09:49:47+01:00 Layer-averaged Relative Humidity profiles (index.php?option=com_content task=view id=140 Itemid=1) are now available on the ICARE data center ( since the launch of the Megha-Tropiques satellite. This product decomposes the troposphere into 6 layers: 100-200hPa, 250-350hPa, 400-600hPa, 650-700hPa, 750-800hPa and 850-950hPa. The retrieval scheme named ARPIA for Atmospheric Relative humidity profile Including the Analysis of confidence intervals encompasses the estimation of the mean RH as well as its standard deviation interpreted as the 1-sigma confidence interval. ARPIA considered cloud-free and cloudy conditions, oceanic and continental scenes. The only limit is for icy layers on top of convective clouds and for precipitating conditions, which are withdrawn using the Hong et al (2005) threshold method adapted for SAPHIR channels. The product consists in 1° x 1 ° x 1 day accumulated rainfall estimate (in mm) and the associated uncertainty estimation. The release concerns the June, July, August and September 2012, 2013 and 2014 over the tropical belt (30s-30n). The format is netCDF. The TAPEER approach merges IR geostationary data at full resolution with the GPM constellation microwave imagers, including SAPHIR on board Megha-Tropiques. The tropical energy cycles are central to the climate, its variability and its future evolution as reflected in the WCRP Grand Challenges being led by both the GEWEX program and the WGCM. The dynamical nature of the tropical water cycle and the control on the energy balance on both the tropical atmospheric dynamics and water cycle is one of the main incentives of the conference. Sessions covering the various aspects of this complex coupled problem are anticipated, including topics on the large scale Hadley/Walker circulation, the ITCZ, ENSO, monsoons, MJO, tropical convection, extreme rain events and droughts, and water and energy budget studies associated with these phenomena. The conference will bring together theoretical, observing (in-situ and from satellites) and modeling perspectives as well as address the evolution of the tropical phenomena under climate change. Dr Roca presentation's was based on the recently published paper in Journal of Climate dealing with the importance of the Mesoscale Convective Systems in the tropical rainfall budget (Roca et al., 2014 ( ). At the symposium, an updated investigation was shown where for the first time the rainfall data from the Megha-Tropiques team were used. The TAPEER v1.0 data indeed included all the GPM constellation member active during the period of study (summer 2012) including the MADRAS data. CERES provides cloud-aerosol-radiation budget data globally each day but at limited times of the day due to its sun-synchronous orbit. GERB provides very high temporal coverage of the ERB from its geostationary orbit over a limited portion of the Earth, and ScaRaB on Megha-Tropiques provides ERB data from a low-inclination orbit. Such a remarkable and historic set of concurrent observations will provide unique opportunities to improve our understanding of the ERB from both the observational and modeling perspectives. The GPM Core will be on a 65° inclination orbit, sampling the tropics and the mid-latitudes with its passive microwave radiometer, GMI, and its two radars (Ka and Ku band), to detect rain and snow events. The GPM Core will be used as a reference to intercalibrate and compare all the data from the different satellites of the GPM constellation among which Megha-Tropiques is a key player between 30°N and 30°S. Satellite operations and instruments checking will take place in the next few weeks. The storm center passed approximately 100 km of La Réunion Island in the afternon of January 2nd. The SAPHIR instrument was able to capture 21 brightness temperature images showing the evolution of the storm structure from its early stage as a tropical depression, to the full cyclone, and then to the dissipating stage. The image shown here is the 183+-11 GHz image on january 1st at 2045 UTC, showing the storm at one of its most intense moment while moving toward La Réunion. The eye and eyewall structure are clearly visible and also the convective rain bands extending to the south-east and affecting la Reunion and Mauricius.
